2001年，當蘇格蘭格拉斯哥兩個懷揣音樂理想的年輕人Alex Kapranos和Bob Hardy開始一塊玩音樂並有組樂隊的念頭的時候，接受過專業訓練的鋼琴手Nick McCarthy在這個時候出現了。同時，McCarthy還會演奏貝斯。而當在Yummy Fur樂隊擔任鼓手的Paul Thomson加入的時候，這支以藝術學校學生為班底的樂隊擁有了較為固定的陣容。
